carlos cortés

Carlos Cortes is a visual and performing artist whose work has been exhibited, published and performed in several European countries and in the USA. He studied Linguistics and Dance in Spain and Theatre Design in the UK His current practice is focused in the relationship between human groups, their activities and the space they inhabit, the objects they use and the traces they leave. He uses found and recycled objects as starting point for most of his visual art work, overlapping his creative input with the imprints left in those objects by the passing of time and the people who used them. The struggle between the painted surface and the 3D elements bears witness to the influence of early Renaissance Altarpieces. This is also manifested in narratives where historic and cinematic myths and religious storytelling go hand in hand with complex gender games, thus creating humorous scenarios not devoid of a certain anguish. His performances deal with movement, space, and visual elements. They are often interactive events in which site-specific issues, architecture and landscape inform a dialogue between audience and performer. His shows are also a quest for a ritualistic experience and an attempt to unveil the power of the collective subconscious as a creative force. He also designs sets and costumes for other companies and has curated and organized artistic events.
