elena garcía de la fuente

Elena uses the city of London and its diverse population as inspiration. Her objective is to search, find and invent new images that draw attention to different social and political aspects of life in this great metropolis. The sources for the paintings are photographs she has taken around London. From these, she selects close-ups in an attempt to capture partial impressions of the city. According to Elena, “the final results are intended to be pieces of fragmented memory that show my personal vision of the world. In this, reality is transformed to show a different view of the same things.”

Elena also makes her living as a portrait painter. Her portrait commissions focus on the potential of colour and its spatial qualities.

Elena García de la Fuente was born in Madrid (1975) and raised in Málaga. She has lived and worked in London since 1999. She studied Fine Art at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid, before finishing her studies at Leeds Metropolitan University in 1997. She completed an MA in Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s Institute in London in 2001. In 2005 she has won a Funding Award from the Prince’s Trust.

Elena has been awarded 3rd place in the Art Interview 3rd Quarterly International Online Artist Competition, Oct 1st- Dec 31st 2005. See details here.
